Artist's Description
Sunrise is a magical time - especially when the first golden rays of the new day cast their light on a building which has seen as many dawns as the Maiden's Tower.
Historical records show that the tower has stood at this spot, where the historic River Boyne flows into the Irish Sea, since at least 1582.
The tower is said to have got its name from the fact that it was built during the reign of Elizabeth I – the so-called Virgin Queen – from 1558 to 1603.
It is specifically mentioned in the royal charter granted to the town of Drogheda by King James I in 1609.
There is general agreement that the tower was constructed as a warning beacon to sailors and as a look-out point to warn of potential invaders during the Elizabethan Wars with Spain in the late 16th/early 17th centuries.
The adjoining former boat house hasn't been there for quite as long. But most people agree that the two structures make a compatible and quite handsome couple.
