The sun dips beneath the horizon on the longest day of the year, throwing a soft warm glow over the River Boyne where it meets the Irish Sea.

The Boyne Estuary straddles two Irish counties - with the villages of Mornington, County Meath, to the south and Baltray, County Louth, to the north.

It is a river awash with history and myth. It takes its name from Boann, an ancient Irish water goddess.

It is where the mythical hero Fionn Mac Cumhaill attained supreme wisdom after tasting the Salmon of Knowledge.

Some miles inland from the tranquil spot you see here, the Battle of the Boyne was fought in 1690.

It was an event which scarred Irish history, fuelling deep and bitter political divisions for the following 300 years.
