Artist's Description

The Maiden’s Tower, situated at the mouth of the River Boyne in Mornington, is reputed to have been built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

The first reliable historical record of its existence was in 1582 – some 24 years after she was appointed to the top job in the British Empire.

In a roundabout way, it may even have been named after her. Elizabeth was after all known as the Virgin Queen.

The 60-feet high stone structure was probably built as a navigational aid for ships entering the Boyne from the Irish Sea.

The tower is the location of a particularly dramatic incident in Neil Jordan’s novel, Shade.

In 2015, rather improbably, it was used as a film location for the shooting of an American television insurance commercial featuring Harvey Keitel.
