Description
The High Crosses at Monasterboice in County Louth are among the finest examples of early Christian art in Ireland.
A monastic settlement was established in the late 5th Century and remained an important religious centre for some 600 years.
The Cross of Muiredach - on the left - is thought to date from the 10th Century. It's famous for its magnificent biblical carvings depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
Standing at 5.2 metres, it is regarded as the finest High Cross in Ireland.
In the background are the ruins of the site’s original round tower which is about 35 metres high. Its original conical roof has long since been lost.
In much more recent times, other high crosses modelled on the early Christian style came to be erected on private graves at Monasterboice, echoing the location’s unique Christian heritage.
