Description
Ben Bulben is probably Ireland’s most distinctive mountain.
Geologists will tell you that it was formed during the Ice Age. Moving glaciers cut into the earth, creating layers of limestone, mudstone and shale that ultimately became the iconic landmark we see today.
But Ben Bulben’s majestic presence is so much greater than the sum of its constituent parts. At 526 metres at its highest point, it dominates the landscape of north Sligo.
Sometimes referred to as Ireland’s Table Mountain, it also enjoys a special place in local mythology. And of course it features prominently in the poetry of WB Yeats who is buried in nearby Drumcliffe Churchyard.
Summiting Ben Bulben is not generally recommended for the inexperienced climber. The terrain at the top is hazardous and weather conditions up there can be challenging and unpredictable.
There are, however, guided hikes to the top – and no shortage of great walking trails at the lower levels. So what are you waiting for….?
